Pets, Kids, Furniture… Can we have it all?

When you walk into your living room, you may immediately notice a smudge of dirt on your sofa, clumps of collected dog hair in the corners of the room, or a juice stain from your toddler’s sippy cup on the rug. Unfortunately, your home’s dirt situation may be even worse than you think it is. Let’s talk about how you can keep your furniture clean, even with kids and pets running through your home all day!

How does furniture really get dirty?

We know how furniture, carpets, and other parts of your home get dirty thanks to researchers like Paloma Beamer from the University of Arizona and Andrea Ferro from Clarkston University who spend their days studying dust and dirt. According to Beamer, about one third of our home’s dust comes from indoor sources “[l]ike pieces of your carpet fiber or your furniture, your bedding, or anything like that that starts decaying.” The other two thirds come from soil and outdoor air particles.

If you have pets, their hair can make up a lot of the dust in your home. Ferro has found that in her home specifically, she always finds cat hair in the dust particles.

Why should you care about dirt and dust on your furniture?

Ferro told NPR that without vacuuming and cleaning all surfaces in your home, including furniture, harmful substances can remain in your home indefinitely. For example, “We’re finding things like [the pesticide] DDT in many floor dust samples… We banned that decades ago, but it’s still there.”

Also, the Chicago Tribune reports that vacuuming items like your sofas and ottoman can “help your furniture look better and last longer.”

How can you keep your furniture clean on a regular basis?

Here are some expert cleaning tips for your sofas, chairs, and ottomans:

  • Vacuum your delicate and rarely used furniture pieces every 1-2 months.
  • If you have pets in your home, you should vacuum sofas, chairs, and ottomans twice per week.
  • Leather furniture should be vacuumed or dusted with a microfiber cloth once per week. Use special leather cleaning solution every 3-6 months.
  • Do not machine wash your upholstered fabrics, because this can shrink the fabric and ruin the finish (such as Sofa Creations’ stain resistant materials).
  • If you have kids or pets, professionally clean your furniture once per year. Without kids or pets, you can get away with professional cleanings once every five years.

How can you clean a stain on your sofa and other furniture covered with upholstered fabric?

If you get a stain on a sofa or sectional which was purchased from Sofa Creations, first look through your records to see if you purchased our five year stain protection plan. If so, here’s what to do:

  1. Pull out your protection plan contact information to report the stain or damage.
  2. We will send you professional cleaning advice, and even send you free cleaning products if needed to remove the stain.
  3. If the stain can’t be removed through regular cleaning, we will send out a Certified Service Technician to professionally spot clean the furniture piece.
  4. Finally, if the stain or damage still remains, we will replace any portion of the furniture which is affected at no additional cost.

If you don't have Sofa Creations’ stain protection plan for the furniture piece, look at the care instructions on the furniture tag. This label should include tips for spot cleaning. If you see letters, here’s what they mean:

  • W: Use a water-based cleaning solution.
  • S: This furniture piece cannot be cleaned with water-based solutions and needs professional cleaning.
  • WS: You can clean the spot using water-based or water-free cleaning solutions.
  • X: Do not use any cleaning products on this piece—you can only vacuum or lightly brush the area.

  1. Dry the wet spot immediately by gently blotting with a dry, white cloth. (Only blot, do not rub!)
  2. Dampen another white cloth with lukewarm water and blot the spot gently. (Again, do not rub it in!)
  3. If the stain persists, hire a professional leather cleaner to come remove the spot.

How can you protect your furniture from stains?

We do not recommend spraying your furniture with spray found in a regular store, because this may void your furniture warranty or mess up the finish. Instead, we recommend purchasing our five year stain protection plan so you’re covered in any situation where an accidental stain or damage occurs. With this protection, you have professional support any time you need help cleaning a stain or repairing damage to your sofa or sectional.
