Where to donate your old furniture when you’re redecorating

Renovating and redecorating your home is so much fun! But as you redesign your home, you may be wondering what to do with the old furniture you don’t need anymore. Here are some of our favorite nonprofit organizations in the area which can take your furniture donations. All of these organizations are 501c3 certified, so they can provide you with a donation receipt for tax deductions!

If you want to support economically disadvantaged families…

Habitat for Humanity, several locations — Habitat has several branches across the Bay Area, including locations in Marin, Contra Costa, Alameda, San Francisco, San Mateo, and Santa Clara Counties. Many of these locations offer pick up services for your furniture donations, and most request a donation of $15 or more to help cover the costs of paying staff and transporting the items to their offices. Your furniture will be sold in their ReStore thrift store to raise funds for their home build projects.

If you want to support veterans…

Vietnam Veterans of America, several locations — VVA offers pick up services of your small furniture items in nearly every Bay Area city. However, only small furniture items, such as bedside tables and rugs, can be accepted due to space limitations. Your furniture will find a new home with Vietnam veterans living in your area.

If you want to support hospice care…

Hospice East Bay, Contra Costa County — Hospice East Bay offers pick up services for those living in Contra Costa County. You can also drop off donations to one of their six thrift shoppe locations anytime before 4 pm each day. Your furniture will be sold in their thrift shoppes to support their hospice care programs, caring for end-of-life patients who often cannot afford to pay for services.

If you want to support individuals recovering from addiction…

Salvation Army, several locations — The Salvation Army also picks up furniture from your home! The furniture is sold in their thrift stores to raise funds for their Adult Rehabilitation Centers. The ARCs support residents who are in recovery from addiction as they transition back into the workforce, find permanent housing, and overcome other challenges.

If you want to support the homeless…

Bay Area Furniture Bank, Sunnyvale — This organization will actually pick up your furniture donation right from your home! They do request a donation of $85 or more to help cover the operational costs of the transportation, but the convenience factor alone is well worth the cost. Your furniture will find a new home with someone transitioning out of homelessness.

LSS of Northern California, several locations — Although LSS does not offer a regular pick up service, they can arrange for some donation pick up appointments if they have enough advance notice. (You can also bring the donations to one of their three locations on your own.) However, they only have the space to accept small, unupholstered furniture such as night stands, lamps, and artwork. Your furniture will find a new home with one of their clients who they are helping to connect with stable housing.

Tri-Valley Haven, Livermore — If your furniture can’t be picked up by Bay Area Furniture Bank or LSS for some reason, you can bring it over the to Tri-Valley Haven Thrift Store between 11 am-2 pm any day of the week. Your furniture will be sold to raise funds to protect domestic violence victims and other homeless individuals in the Bay Area.

If you want to support individuals facing barriers to work…

Goodwill, several locations — Goodwill has dozens of Bay Area locations, including some in San Francisco, San Rafael, Novato, and San Mateo. Your furniture will be sold in their thrift store to raise money for their career counseling and advancement centers. Goodwill’s Career Solutions centers don’t just help people find jobs—they find the root of each person’s barriers to finding work and provide job skills training, match people with jobs based on their individual needs (such as accommodations for disabilities), and coach job seekers on interview skills.

If you want to support a cause we haven’t listed yet…

Community Thrift in San Francisco offers pick up of furniture donations and you can choose which of their partner nonprofit organizations you want to support with the sale of your furniture. Choose from organizations serving the hungry, those living with AIDS, homeless animals, at risk kids, the environment, or another great cause.
