10 Easy Living Room Updates

Do you feel like your living room or den needs a refresh, but you don’t have time to completely makeover your interior design? Here are 10 easy ways to breathe new life into your living room decor without sacrificing the next several weeks for a big design project:

  1. Change out your accessories.

If you feel bored with your living room design, many people may recommend rearranging all your furniture…but this process can take a long time, especially if you don’t end up liking the new arrangement you try first. Instead, try leaving all your big pieces of furniture where they are and replace a few key accessories, such as your throw pillows and lamp shades.

As we get closer to the fall, cozy up your living room with some rich shades of burgundy, navy, and burnt orange. Plus, get some help choosing your new throw pillows with our handy guide!

  1. Build a new gallery wall.

This is another way of mixing things up without having to move all your heavy furniture around! It’s very easy to create a gallery wall because there isn’t a right or wrong way to do arrange your favorite artwork, photographs, and mementos. If you already have a gallery wall in place, try changing out some of the photographs and shadowbox objects with newer memories.

  1. Replace your area rug.

One of our interior designer friends once told us that an area rug is sort of like your living room’s necktie—it not only completes the ensemble, but also gives you a chance to show a flair of personality. The same way you can refresh an old outfit with a new necktie, you can refresh your living room with a new area rug.

  1. Pull out a new accent color.

Find an accent color in one of your living room pieces, such as a striking hue from the painting over your fireplace or a stripe on a throw pillow, and find some creative ways to draw it out even more in your decor. For example, you could find a pouf with the same pop of color and decorate your coffee table with flowers of the same shade.

  1. Organize anything that looks like clutter.

You may feel like you don’t have a cluttered room because the word “clutter” generally refers to things that are messy, unnecessary, or unattractive to look at. However, anything lying around your room can look like clutter if you have too much stuff all in one place without a method to the madness. Consider finding a couple catch-all dishes, decorative bins, and pretty baskets which can cut down on the appearance of clutter. 1. Add some plant life.

One solution to a boring room is to add something which is never boring—plants! Researchers from Stanford University have found that elements from nature greatly improve our mental health. Plus, many plants can help purify your indoor air. Some new flowers, succulents, cactus, or greenery could be just what you need to add new visual interest to your living room.
